Each year, the American Branch stages a major conference – International Law Weekend – which runs for several days in New York each October, as well as biennial International Law Weekends on the west coast and in the Midwest. These educational conferences bring together practitioners, academics, government officials, and members of international and nongovernmental organizations. One distinctive feature of the American Branch is that Branch members and student associates are entitled to free admission to the major conference, International Law Weekend.
The material below highlights International Law Weekend, International Law Weekend – West, International Law Weekend – Midwest, other Branch programs, and the biennial conferences of the London-based International Law Association.
Each October, the American Branch presents International Law Weekend (ILW) in New York City. This two-and-a-half day conference features over 30 panels, and many of the world’s leading international lawyers and diplomats participate. In recent years, keynote luncheon speakers have included the president of the American Society of International Law; and the Legal Adviser to the U.S. Department of State. Gala receptions have been hosted by the Finnish, Belgian, and British missions to the United nations.
Recent ILWs have attracted an audience of over 1,200 students, academics, diplomats, and practitioners. Registration for the ILW, remains free of charge for members of the American Branch of the International Law Association and for the Branch's student associates. Sponsorship by law firms and interested practitioners of the costs of these events is always welcomed and recognized.
Every other year the American Branch holds International Law Weekend – West. This two-day conference began in 2001 in Malibu and has been held in subsequent years in Los Angeles, Costa Mesa, and Santa Clara, California, and in Salem, Oregon.
The American Branch has also inaugurated International Law Weekends – Midwest. These conferences are modeled on the highly successful International Law Weekend – West, which brings together international law practitioners and academics to present panels and discuss significant themes and developments concerning a range of international law topics. Like ILW – West, ILW – Midwest is scheduled in alternate years. In 2015, International Law Weekend was held at the Frederick K. Cox International Law Center at Case Western Reserve University School of Law.
In 2017 International Law Weekend - Midwest took place at the Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.
The most recent International Law Weekend - South took place March 2-3, 2017 at Texas A&M's Law School in Fort Worth, Texas.
